We hiked from Grey's Arch Trail onto the Rough Trail, then Rush Ridge trail back. Grey's Arch was beautiful as normal, the hike downstream to Rough Trail had lots of fun trees with roots climbing around rocks. Beyond weird. The climb off of the Rough Trail up to Rush Ridge, yuck, hard as normal. At least, less ice than the last time I scrambled this way! I think we all enjoyed our outing into the fresh air.
The trek out was easy enough, through the rhododendron forest. The descent down to Grey's is where it first got interesting. There's a little tight spaces, then the stairs. I don't mean your average flight of stairs in your house. I mean, wooden stairs down the side of a cliff. They are strong enough, but man in places they don't feel it. Add in a 9 year old who is deciding if he's afraid of heights, the forest, hiking, and exercise, we had to do a little talking and a little "I'll go first" to get everyone down there.
