American Chemical Society meetings area always fun. They usually occur in major cities with lots of people and night life. That's on top of the talks. Lots and lots of talks. On Chemistry. Which is awesome, don't get me wrong. And when the talks are over, there are poster session, receptions, open bars, networking, the Exposition of new toys, hotels, hotels, and more hotels. We call jumping from one symposia to another "party hopping" for a reason. I don't know what it is about the Hyatt either. Their buildings seem magical with the tiered over-looks of the lobby and the glass elevators. I love staring up at the ceiling and watching the light bounce off the white railings. We walked back toward the Capital and dinner, crossing over the canal. It's hard to imagine a city so far inland having a canal, but Indianapolis does. It's rather well done too. I didn't get a chance to try out the paddle boat, maybe sometime I'll get someone to go with me and we'll try it together. We got dinner at Weber Grill. Amazing grilled meat. I had melt-in-your-mouth BBQ brisket with whipped sweet potatoes and broccoli. I couldn't eat it all, though I tried. The Weber Backyard beer was good too. Some local selection of a white wheat beer. | Call me easily entertained, but I always end up taking lots of pictures of the hotel rooms I stay in. This time, I was fascinated by the Kohler sink they had. I've always seen them on tv or in magazines, but this time, I actually got to use a bowl sink! The last few meetings I've been to, I have been sequestered in a windowless room with a group of people to write an exam. Not just any exam. One that is standardized, secret, and all around security conscious. Blah. It's been fun, but it's tiring. No talks, no symposia, no meeting new people other than those on the committee. When we are done for the day, which in the past hasn't been until really late in the evening, everything is over. All there is to do is go out to dinner, grab some beers and go to bed. If we can rally the energy, we try to make it to talks two days into the conference, but we're so warn out, we've lost interest! This time was somewhat different. It was still a day locked away in a windowless room. But we were actually done in time for a normal dinner. Done in time to make on of the receptions and to walk back toward the hotel in some daylight. The company was pretty good as well. Those of us on the committee who were staying in town all went out to dinner together after the "Pre-CHE Reception, Reception." The music and food was pretty good, but not too many people were in attendance. At least it was free food. |
