Icarus was a new piece, pared with a movie. I wasn't impressed by it. I didn't like the movie filmed only in silver and blues. My other major take-away from it is that Space always sounds the same. It seems that composers all like to musically describe outer space using the same general themes. Listen to Star Wars, Star Trek, this piece, and any other movie or tv show about space. When the characters travel into outer space, the music goes through the same theme! Geez, pick a new theme!
I'm not a huge fan of the story line either and some of the science. But whatev's. I just didn't like it. Get over it.
After the performance we had dinner at Nick Ryan's. I had been there a while back, but hadn't been for dinner. I was excited, as the place outside smelled amazing. I had the grilled pork chops with gouda grits, cranberry-apple chutney, honey-butter sauce and vegetables. It was super wonderful. The pock chop was cooked perfectly and melted in my mouth. The gouda grits takes more like mashed potatoes than grits. I must have been hungry, because even the green beans tasted good. Ok, I was hungry. It was 10pm and I hadn't eaten since lunch! Definitely worth going to!
